SLAM 2020 Christmas Gift Cards!

The Sierra Leone Action Mission thanks you for your continued generous support of our orphanage and school construction project. During the pre-Christmas season we offer alternative Christmas gifts in the form of donations to the orphanage though gift cards in the denominations of $25, $50 and $100. The cards are a beautiful way to help the orphans as well as to demonstrate to your loved ones that you care for the less fortunate. Covid has reduced our fundraising, but you can still help.

The gift cards can be delivered right to your mailbox. People living in Winnipeg can phone Gerald Sliva at 204-256-6205 to make contactless arrangements for delivery and payment at a convenient time. Others can phone to order cards to be mailed to them.

The following are images of the three denominations of cards as well as of the reverse side of the $100 card. Similar messages are on all three cards.

We wish you peace, gratitude and safety during this difficult time.

Sincere appreciation,
Sierra Leone Action Mission

Behind the Scenes at SLAM

This is a celebration of what goes on behind the scenes. With SLAM, our objective is not simply to keep the orphans alive and whisk them out the door when they reach adulthood (whatever that is). We try to ensure they become self-sufficient and contributing members of their society. To that end, members of our volunteer committee, as well as a few generous donors, have supported the higher education of some orphans.

We are especially proud of Abraham Jimmy, one of the first orphans to be helped by SLAM. He graduated from high school and dreamed of becoming a doctor. With our help, he went on to the University of Makeni and attained a BSc. Hon. Degree in Public health. While he was there, the Ebola crisis hit Sierra Leone. He saw an immediate need for helping his fellow countrymen so he immediately went to work helping those stricken by Ebola. Once the Ebola crisis subsided he went on to university in Ghana where this spring he received a degree in MPhil Health System Research and Management.Examples like Abraham have inspired a culture of academic excellence at the SLAM orphanage, and as a result, the top three students in the entire local district are SLAM home kids. More recently Abraham Jimmy has begun providing health services in Sierra Leone through a mobile clinic with a van donated by one of our major supporters. More good news: Abraham Jimmy has just been offered a position as lecturer in the University of Makeni in Sierra Leone. He will continue to provide health services with the mobile clinic as well as being a lecturer at the university. While working at his two jobs he also provides assistance by volunteering at the orphanage to oversee the budgeting and expenditures, ensuring the orphans are supported effectively and economically. This has become critical because of inflationary pressures during the Covid 19 pandemic.

Thank you to all who continue to support our orphanage and who are helping to ensure our new school becomes fully operational.

Any additional financial support is appreciated. Should the spirit move you please make a donation.

SLAM Update – Thanks From Abraham

Dear Supporters of the SLAM orphanage,

We want you to know the results of your kind and generous support. Because of you, over 40 orphans are now receiving food, accommodation, education and love. They are so grateful. Also, because of special additional donations from some individuals we are able to fund advanced university medical training for Abraham, one of the first orphans initially helped by SLAM. The following is a message he recently sent to our committee.

God bless you and the entire team. I’m really grateful to all of you. I don’t know without Jason and you guys what should have been my future. May God reward you for taking away my tears. Please extend my sincere appreciation to the team. I just wish one day I will have the opportunity to do this myself in person, though words cannot describe exactly the joy you guys has given through Christ. Have a wonderful and blessed Sunday. Much love to you all

– Abraham

Thank you to everyone for your prayers, for your ongoing support and also for the special donations which have made Abraham’s university training a reality. His hard work and leadership is giving hope to many other orphans who will contribute to helping Sierra Leone become more self-sufficient.

We continue to work toward our vision of having a school built to complement the orphanage. Any support you can give is greatly appreciated.

Details on how you can donate can be found here.
