Milton Begins University
The orphans continue to do well. Milton, one of our many success stories, has successfully gone through the university matriculation ceremony.

We’ve received some amazing new pictures of the Koidu Academy with it’s beautiful paint job!
Effective immediately Sierra Leone Action Mission is accepting donations by e-transfer to our email address slam@accountabledevelopment.org
Donations over twenty dollars are eligible for a Canadian Income Tax receipt. Your year-end donation by December 31 will still apply to your 2020 tax year. Thank you for your generosity.
All the children at the Pearl Dudek Centre (PDC) would like to wish you a Merry Christmas and a happy New Year!
The Sierra Leone Action Mission thanks you for your continued generous support of our orphanage and school construction project. During the pre-Christmas season we offer alternative Christmas gifts in the form of donations to the orphanage though gift cards in the denominations of $25, $50 and $100. The cards are a beautiful way to help the orphans as well as to demonstrate to your loved ones that you care for the less fortunate. Covid has reduced our fundraising, but you can still help.
The gift cards can be delivered right to your mailbox. People living in Winnipeg can phone Gerald Sliva at 204-256-6205 to make contactless arrangements for delivery and payment at a convenient time. Others can phone to order cards to be mailed to them.
The following are images of the three denominations of cards as well as of the reverse side of the $100 card. Similar messages are on all three cards.
We wish you peace, gratitude and safety during this difficult time.
Sincere appreciation,
Sierra Leone Action Mission
This is a celebration of what goes on behind the scenes. With SLAM, our objective is not simply to keep the orphans alive and whisk them out the door when they reach adulthood (whatever that is). We try to ensure they become self-sufficient and contributing members of their society. To that end, members of our volunteer committee, as well as a few generous donors, have supported the higher education of some orphans.
We are especially proud of Abraham Jimmy, one of the first orphans to be helped by SLAM. He graduated from high school and dreamed of becoming a doctor. With our help, he went on to the University of Makeni and attained a BSc. Hon. Degree in Public health. While he was there, the Ebola crisis hit Sierra Leone. He saw an immediate need for helping his fellow countrymen so he immediately went to work helping those stricken by Ebola. Once the Ebola crisis subsided he went on to university in Ghana where this spring he received a degree in MPhil Health System Research and Management.Examples like Abraham have inspired a culture of academic excellence at the SLAM orphanage, and as a result, the top three students in the entire local district are SLAM home kids. More recently Abraham Jimmy has begun providing health services in Sierra Leone through a mobile clinic with a van donated by one of our major supporters. More good news: Abraham Jimmy has just been offered a position as lecturer in the University of Makeni in Sierra Leone. He will continue to provide health services with the mobile clinic as well as being a lecturer at the university. While working at his two jobs he also provides assistance by volunteering at the orphanage to oversee the budgeting and expenditures, ensuring the orphans are supported effectively and economically. This has become critical because of inflationary pressures during the Covid 19 pandemic.
Thank you to all who continue to support our orphanage and who are helping to ensure our new school becomes fully operational.
Any additional financial support is appreciated. Should the spirit move you please make a donation.
Attached are three photos: 1. The orphans and house mother. 2. A recent photo of Abraham Jimmy. 3. Our nearly completed school.
Abraham Jimmy, one of the first orphans helped, recently graduated in medicine at a University in Ghana. He was stranded there since his graduation this spring because of Covid 19. In late September he finally was able to return to Sierra Leone where he will be setting up a mobile medical clinic to help provide healthcare to his countrymen. Here he is thanking everyone who helped him, and who helped to build the new school which he is touring for the first time. Finda Kamara, the orphanage house mother is by his side.
Thanks to the help of you, our generous donors, we have completed the building of the school, Koidu Academy. We are now concentrating our efforts in fundraising for furnishings, equipment and staff hiring. We appreciate any help you can give.
This month’s update on the Koidu Academy Build is short but progress continues to be made. Plastering has been completed and painting will be done in the coming days. Here’s a few more pictures of the school!
The school building is near completion! The doors and windows are in place with more details to come. This is an incredible, large-scale project and is being managed closely to ensure completion. The contractor and the team are confident this project will be completed on schedule. Soon it will be time to celebrate!
